Sustain the Groove

Our journey at DISCO RIOT began with a vision to inspire, empower, and ignite positive change through movement arts. With five successful years behind us, we’re thrilled to continue our journey. Now, as we continue to evolve and thrive, we find ourselves at the heart of creative transformation in the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art. This new home is not only our stage, but a sanctuary for artistic expression.

In the spirit of sustainability, DISCO RIOT has cultivated a thriving ecosystem of diverse artistry, growing into a living testament to the power of community, passion, and persistence. We are ready to tackle the next phase of making DISCO RIOT a sustainable resource for San Diego.

Your support will enable us to develop a vibrant rehearsal and performance space, continue to offer accessible dance offerings for all, build a more sustainable movement community through innovative programming, and expand our impact into the heart of San Diego’s cultural landscape. Be a part of our journey, and let’s Sustain the Groove, because together, we can move hearts, minds, and the world.

With your help, in 2024 we will:

  • Continue exciting iterations of staple program like donation-based classes, Choreo & ____ and Queer Mvmnt Fest
  • Develop both rehearsal and performance space at the Museum of Contemporary Art alongside Blindspot Collective
  • Launch a winter S P A C E Residency Pro for experienced dance makers
  • Pilot our (R)evolution Mentorship Program for emerging local dance artists ages 20-26
  • Tackle a civic engagement campaign in support of the 2024 election with another round of Move American

We are currently at $22,760

of our $25,000 goal!

You can make a one-time or recurring donation to support Season 6!

DISCO RIOT is leading the charge for (r)evolution of movement and performing arts culture in San Diego. Your contributions to DISCO RIOT always go directly towards the generation of new movement-based art, resources for artist collaboration, and the necessities of building a stronger community. Every dollar you give impacts the possibility of more dance, storytelling, innovation and artist retention in our region.

Thank you for being a part of the movement!

2023 End-of-Season Report

Season 5 took DISCO RIOT programming to a new level. We upscaled critical DISCO RIOT programs like our donation based classes, Queer Mvmnt Fest, Choreo & _____, and S P A C E Alliance Studio Residencies, responded to community needs with community auditions, and professional development workshops, and grew our internal administrative and production capacity with evolving staff roles. While taking care of our programs in real time, we also looked to the future to strategize pathways towards sustainability that will allow DISCO RIOT to continue to serve the community with more stability and nuance. Here’s a recap of what DISCO RIOT achieved in 2023:

  • We supported the creation and presentation of more than 60 individual dance/movement-based works by 63 artists and their collaborators over 12 different events in 2023.
  • We offered more than 120 donation-based dance classes with a wide range of excellent local teaching artists.
  • We established meaningful relationships and partnerships with MCASD and Blindspot Collective to activate the downtown museum location with performance and live art practice.
  • We received significant funding from California Arts Council, the San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture, San Diego County Supervisors Office, Clare Rose Foundation, and WESTAF in order to make big impacts with our 2024 programming.
  • Our brilliant administrative and production team members leveled up their work this season, and took our programming to new heights. In 2024, we’ll continue to grow our staff opportunities in order to support professional development and pathways to increased capacity for our community artists in all roles with the organization.
  • We solidified our foundational programming while looking ahead for new ways to further sustain and develop the San Diego dance community; we’ve thoughtfully designed ways to weave in new layers of programming that will amplify our current offerings while reaching more deeply into the community.

We appreciate your support and want to show you some love. Contribute and get some sweet perks!
