Call for Artist Applications 2020

S P A C E Alliance Studio Residency

Residency Dates:

June 28 – August 9, 2020

Be a part of DISCO RIOT’s second edition of S P A C E Alliance, a studio residency program promoting the cooperation of local spaces and movement-artists. This unique program not only connects dance makers to rehearsal space, but also offers an organized and mindful experience for creative inquiry, artistic development, networking, creative and cultural exchange, and a platform to share work. In alignment with DISCO RIOT’s mission, we seek to promote interdisciplinary movement-based art with themes of social change and storytelling.

In response to the current conditions created by the COVID-19 pandemic, We have had to make some adjustments to the residency format: 1) we are offering an accelerated 6-week timeline for this years’ residents and 2) only accepting applications for solo movement projects, unless you can propose a project that follows the current distancing guidelines. Projects that involve cross-disciplinary collaborators who are not required to be in physical proximity or share physical space (i.e. a movement artist and a music composer, videographer, visual artist etc.) will be given priority consideration.

The program offers:

  • 5-7 hours a week of rehearsal space in a local studio that will serve as home base for the artist.
  • Opportunities for works-in-progress showings with feedback sessions from other artists.
  • A culminating presentation of the work developed during the residency in a shared production with other S P A C E Alliance artists-in-residence between August 8-9, 2019. This may be a digital experience depending on health and safety guidelines.
  • Support for collaborative projects.
  • Photo and video documentation of the process and culminating presentation.

In the spirit of exchange, the selected artists will:

  • Teach one master classes or workshops in their preferred discipline at their home studio for members of the studio community.
  • Offer one work-in progress showing for their home studio community with the intention of sharing about artistic process.
  • Participate in artist feedback sessions with other S P A C E Alliance artists-in-residence.
  • Develop approximately 20  minutes of “work” to be shown at the culminating presentation. (This work does not necessarily have to be a “completed” product, but it might be. The work can be shared in any format approved by the DISCO RIOT S P A C E Alliance directors and can include but is not limited to: live performance, video, movement + discussion, an audience participation experience, durational practice, site-specific work). Clear descriptions of your collaborations and intended format for presentation should be presented in the application.
