What does your typical creation process look like? This could include pre-rehearsal idea development, rehearsal process, and any other relevant aspects of your process.

I usually start creating by improvising. I’ve gotten into the habit of recording myself while I mess around with movement, and then I go back and pick out the parts that feel right. I get my best ideas while I’m driving so my voice memo app is full of random notes and thoughts I’ve had on the road. For this project, I used the sticky note method I learned from Joyce Kushner: I wrote down different pieces of the dance on sticky notes and moved them around until it started to make sense. It was also collaborative. My sister added her own moves and ideas to my sections which helped put things together.

Other than dance, what mediums are important to the overall theme of your piece? This could be music, projection, spoken word, visual etc. What role will these aspects play?

Finding ways to continue my research and not lead the project with the intent of creating movement about the research but letting the research create the movement.
