Class Descriptions

Aisha: This class was built on the foundations of release and modern techniques, floorwork exploration, improvisation practices and having fun! Finding efficiency in the pathways of the body to bring awareness to the connections of body+mind+soul+space make for a perfect Monday morning blues remedy! It’s suggested that the limbs are covered for this class — long sleeves, pants, knee pads and socks.

Lauren: My class will progress from a floor warmup to standing exercises to phrasework that moves through the space and in/out of the floor. We will explore groundedness and buoyancy, stability and freedom, momentum and control. I am interested in flow, transitions, suspension, breath, and efficient use of energy. My aim is to foster a non-judgmental class culture, to allow space for individuality, and to encourage open awareness within the space.

Slow Flow

Mondays 6:30-8pm

at TranscenDANCE

with Alyssa Rose (they/them) & Nicole Oga (she/her)

Slow Flow is an open level space to explore the fundamentals of movement in community. Incorporating yogic and somatic teachings, we will cultivate embodied awareness by moving through both set material and improvisational inquiries. Through mindful movement, we will investigate movement pathways that support ease and safety. Come as you are, leave with a grounded spaciousness in the body/heart/mind. Please wear pants, as we will spend a good amount of time on the floor.
In alignment with the values of DISCO RIOT, this class centers consent, access, and the cultivation of safe(r) community space.
Please reach out to operations@discoriot.org for any accommodation inquiries or requests.
Access: The first two Mondays of each month are taught by Nicole Oga and are focused on access for immunocompromised folx and covid-consciousness (mask-mandatory). The latter half of the month will be taught by Alyssa Rose, focused on access for neurodivergent and physically disabled folx (mask-encouraged).

Authentic Movement

Authentic Movement Exploration

March 30, June 29, August 31, November 30

9:30am-12pm at TranscenDANCE: 5700 El Cajon Blvd, San Diego, CA 92115

Can we enter the vastness of not knowing? Wait and listen for the body’s inner leadings to rise and flow, sink and rest, or burst into being? The practice of Authentic Movement invites us to be present with our full and deepest selves, it offers an entry into seeing clearly through cultivating one’s inner witness. This profound discipline, involving inner-initiated movement, with eyes closed in the receptive presence of a witness connects us to the inner wisdom of the body.
We will deepen our exploration of the elements of Authentic Movement: how to connect with one’s authentic movement, moving and being moved, seeing and being seen, and the roles of mover and witness, both inner and outer. We will continue to embody conscious use of language and use various forms of practice such as dyads, the breathing circle, and the long circle. This series is open to all. If you are new to Authentic Movement you must come to the first session or connect with Jane for an introduction to the practice.

Jane Blount – I am a holistic bodyworker, dance artist/educator, Qigong teacher, embodied anatomy geek with an HHP in Integrative Somatics from the International School of Professional Bodywork (IPSB), and founder of Art Of Massage: Holistic Bodywork. I was introduced to Authentic Movement in 1993 and have been practicing this form more deeply since 2007 when I co-founded a San Diego Authentic Movement Peer Group. In addition to my deep engagement with Authentic Movement, I had an extensive career in dance working in the companies of Jean Isaacs, Nancy McCaleb, John Malashock, Elisa Monte, and Danny Buraczeski among others. I was a co-founder of Lower Left Performance Collective, and have taught and performed contact improvisation, postmodern and contemporary dance throughout San Diego, the Midwest, and NYC. I find deep, quiet joy in sharing the practice of Authentic Movement.

POP IN/POP OUT

POP IN/POP OUT

DISCO RIOT’s POP IN/POP OUT series offers master classes to those in our community from trusted teaching artists to promote a culture of sharing, exploration, diversity, expanding perspectives, and building community. Class is a place of personal growth, community building, curiosity, skill-building, and play. We hope to expand our collective experiences by bringing in teaching artists that challenge what we’re used to. We learn more from one another. We grow together. Join us!

POP IN/POP OUT classes are pay-what-you-can so that we can offer the highest quality experience for the community and for the master teacher. The sliding scale is between $10-20. No one is turned away for lack of funds. Please reach out to community@discoriot.org for assistance.
