Milana Aernova (she/her)

Milana Aernova is an interdisciplinary artist and creative technologist who sculpts experiences at the intersection of movement, performance, and technology. With a foundation in diverse movement styles and computer science, she creates real-time environments using tools like TouchDesigner and camera-based interaction. Her work explores embodiment, the laws of physics, and humanity’s evolving relationship with the modern world. She is particularly drawn to the juxtaposition between artificial and organic as well as mover and witness. She aims to dissolve boundaries between disciplines and interior/exterior worlds, inviting audiences to experience the unknowable complexity of being alive through the synthesis of digital and physical expression.

Milana's Project

This multimedia performance investigates the forces that shape movement through the lens of cymatics — the scientific phenomenon where sound creates visible patterns in water. Inspired by moments when movement feels less controlled and more like being moved by an internal creative force, this work explores the question: What if our movements are actually a particle dance shaped by internal intelligence responding to environmental frequencies?

The performance integrates live somatic dance, real-time generative visuals, and responsive sound environments. Using motion tracking and TouchDesigner, the work captures Milana’s movement and transforms it into dynamic projections that visualize the body’s imagined internal particle dynamics. Through geometric manipulation and particle attractors, the visuals mirror the atomic and energetic shifts occurring within the dancing body.

This integration merges the somatic self with interactive technology, revealing the body not just as a vessel for expression, but as an alive, responsive system of intelligent particles.

Lauren Ai Ling Lee (she/her)

Lauren Ai Ling Lee (she/her) is a San Diego-based movement artist and dance maker. Originally from Singapore, she graduated from UC San Diego, where she was a recipient of the Colleen Kendall Scholarship Endowment. Lauren has been fortunate to perform and present work within the San Diego dance ecosystem, and at the 2025 Keshet Makers Space Experience in Albuquerque, where she was a visiting artist-in-residence. Lauren’s work is largely informed by somatic movement and improvisational practices. Drawing from her background in public health, she is interested in using movement as a mode of healing, and a tool for exploring human resilience and relationships.

Lauren's Project

My experiences with scoliosis and spinal-fusion surgery inform so much of what I do and how I show up in the world. As a dance artist, a lot of my struggle post-surgery has been navigating the dichotomy of momentum and resistance. I have always felt resistance in my body when trying to conform or fit in, but am propelled with so much momentum when I move in seemingly non-traditional ways — I am interested in exploring this relationship throughout this process, with further investigation into how nonconformity can strengthen community. I am also interested in researching the relationship between tension and restraint, perhaps turning to tactile elements to articulate the physicality of a rather invisible phenomenon.

Ilyana Hughes (she/her)

Originally from Dayton, Ohio, Ilyana Hughes is a performer, choreographer, and teacher in San Diego. Since a young age, she has trained at various studios and continued her training and choreographic exploration at Howard University, earning a BFA in Dance. Since moving to San Diego in 2023, she has trained at DISCO RIOT, Malashock, and San Diego Dance Theater, and has performed with DISCO RIOT, SDDT, and NACHMO. Currently, Ilyana is an intern in the DISCO RIOT (R)Evolution Artist Program, and an instructor with Tippi Toes. Ilyana continues to choreograph and perform and is looking forward to upcoming projects.

Ilyana's Project

During this residency, Ilyana is interested in exploring the relationship between art and artist by combining dance and paint. Inspired by Lyall Watson’s idea of dance existing in both space and time, and that dance is unique in the sense that the art and the artist, the creator and creation, are one in the same, her process will involve taping a canvas to the floor and painting it with the dancers’ movements, symbolizing a way for the dance to live on in space. Her process is rooted in collaboration and a mix of set choreography and improv. She looks forward to using a variety of collaborative dance making tools in her rehearsal process to bring her and her collaborators’ visions to life in a final performance.

Erik Izaak (he/they)

Erik Izaak, a Mexican American dancer and choreographer from unceded Kumeyaay land (San Diego) has explored dance for 10 years. Erik found his passion for the arts in his early teens but began a deeper exploration of dance and choreography during his time in university. While earning his BA in Dance at CSU Fullerton, Erik refined his artistry under the guidance of esteemed professors and guest artists like Brad Beakes, Jamila Glass, Yoshito Sakaruba, and Sadie Weinberg. Working with powerhouses pushed him to explore choreography in new ways that center around human expression and connection. Erik Izaak’s movement and art is rooted in identity, community, and heritage. Notable highlights include performing at the 2023 DUMBO Festival and his work “Temiqui” receiving 2024 ACDA Gala recognition.

Erik's Project

During the residency, I would like to explore the deep connection between ourselves and the infinite universe around us. Just as the vast universe holds endless possibilities, so do we, as ever-changing & growing beings. Inspired by the spiraling journey of self-discovery and the themes of Everything Everywhere All At Once, this work embraces the beautiful chaos of life. Healing and growth aren’t linear, and neither is this work nor this life. Through movement, I will explore themes of grief, loss, self-identity, and reconnection to inner power. It’s a reflection of the human experience: unpredictable, emotional, expansive. At its heart, this research is about remembering that even in moments of confusion or pain, we carry universal power and constellations within us.

Niza Galindo (she/her)

Niza Galindo (she/her) is a Chicana dancer and choreographer who is currently based on unceded Kumeyaay land in San Diego, California. She started her dance journey at TranscenDANCE Youth Art Project where she began as a young dancer and later returned as a seasoned professional after graduating from California State University, Long Beach with a B.A. in Dance. Niza returned to TranscenDANCE to work as a Substitute Teaching Artist, Apprentice Teaching Artist, Program Assistant, and Interim Assistant Manager and has since developed her contemporary modern practices alongside her administrative training. Niza is currently an Artist Intern within DISCO RIOT’s (R)Evolution Artist Program where she continues developing her programmatic and educational skills to better serve the dance community. As Niza works to complete her prerequisites to apply for physical therapy schools, she continues to work with physical therapists, and explores physical wellbeing and longevity through dance and movement. At the forefront of her journey, Niza leads with great compassion and interest in creating inclusive and accessible spaces for all those who share the same intentions.

Niza's Project

Niza’s choreographic research centers on the feeling of belonging. She explores the confusion of isolation, the joy of shared experiences, and the quiet power of being accepted through dance. Drawing from personal reflection and community dialogue, Niza uses improvisation and somatic practices to investigate how bodies express a yearning for connection and care. She is especially interested in how emotions live in the body and reflect in our everyday gestures. This work investigates the ways we reach for each other and the spaces where we feel truly seen.
